Global Prayer Map          Helpful Prayer Aids

Persecution Defined:

A situation whereby Christians are kept from obtaining Bibles or other Christian literature by government policy or practice.  Also included are government sanctioned circumstances where Christians are harassed, imprisoned, killed, or deprived of their possessions or liberties because of their faith in Jesus Christ and their desire to worship God according to the dictates of their conscience.  (From Voice of Martyrs)

Martyr Defined:

(n. from the Greek word for "witness")

1) One who chooses to suffers death rather than to deny Jesus Christ or His work. 2) One who bears testimony to the truth of what he has seen or heard or knows, as in a witness in a court of justice. 3) One who sacrifices something very important to further the kingdom of God. 4) One who endures severe or constant suffering for their Christian witness.  (From Jesus Freaks)

Scripture:

Hebrews 13:3 "Remember the prisoners as if chained with them, and those who are mistreated, since you yourselves are in the body also."

Challenge:

Many Christians who actively share their faith experience trials, some form of ridicule (i.e. persecution) in every nation on earth. It goes beyond someone making fun of you for going to church or believing in Jesus.  Jesus called us to lay down our lives for the sake of the gospel.  What about take up our Cross/deny ourselves and follow Him?  (Mark 8:34)  We must not forget what the cross was for Him and is for us.  Forsaking all, I take him.  That all includes our reputation.  Do we love the lost enough to lay down our rights, our reputation, our opinions, much less our very lives to see our neighbor, coworker or the person who checks us out to tell them about Jesus.  Not what church we go to, but about Jesus and His saving power.  No, being laughed at or made fun of is not paying a price.  It wounds our ego - pride - but it doesn't cost us.  As you venture out in praying for the persecuted church lets move out of our comfort zones.  Be challenged.  Ask the Lord to give you a heart of compassion for those who do not have the freedom you do.  It's a challenge that is laid before the Church, it's time to rise up and take it in prayer. Your prayers can and do make a difference.

We like to look at Acts 1:8, "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth", but what most don't know is that the word witnesses finds it's root from the word martyr.  Are we willing to be martyrs in our city, county, state, nation, around the world?  Are we willing to lay down our reputations, our pride, our lives to spread the Gospel?  Missions work starts next door, with you and me.  It's time to quit putting it off to others to do the job that we are called to do our self.  The Church ( you and me) are called to go out and preach the gospel.  As you begin to look at the Church that faces true persecution let it challenge you as never before.  Let their lives and God's word begin to challenge you out of your comfort zone and out to the lost and dying world.
